Group 64 Heating and Air Conditioning Bulletin Number 64 08 98 Woodcliff Lake, NJ February 1999 Product Engineering PERFORM THE PROCEDURE OUTLINED IN THIS SERVICE INFORMATION ON ALL AFFECTED VEHICLES THE NEXT TIME THEY ARE IN THE SHOP FOR MAINTENANCE OR REPAIRS. SUBJECT: A/C Hose Filler Neck Reinforcement Brace MODEL: E39/M52 (all 528i) Situation: The A/C hose (low pressure/intake) tiller neck(2) may leak at the attaching point to the main pipe(arrow). Cause: Vibrations in the hose may cause the filler neck attaching point to leak. Affected Vehicles: E39 / M52 (528i) produced between 8/97 - 6/98. In order to determine if a specific vehicle is affected by this Service Action, it will be necessary to utilize the "Service Menu" of the DCS (Dealer Communication System). Based on the response of the system, either proceed with the corrective action or take no further action. The Chassis Number Ranges listed below are only for informational purposes and are not to be considered as the only deciding factor. Model Chassis Number Range 528i BV53464 - BV56306 528iA BW29539 - BW49997 528iA GT90000 - GT93398 Correction: Install the reinforcement brace between the main hose and the intake pipe. If the hose is leaking, replace the complete hose assembly. Procedure: Check the low pressure/intake hose and install the reinforcement brace: 1. Start the engine and turn on the NC. Set the temperature to the lowest setting and place the blower fan on high. Check to see that the NC compressor is on. 2. Check the filler neck(2) to hose connection (arrow) for leaks using an NC system leak detector . 3. If there are no leaks at the filler neck attaching point, install the reinforcement brace(3) on the hose(1) as illustrated. Tighten the nut to 6 Nm. 4. If the filler neck(2) is leaking, recover the refrigerant , and replace the low pressure/intake hose(between the compressor and evaporator). Evacuate and recharge the system (refer to the green refrigerant charge label for fill quantities). Note: P/N 64 53 8 384 859 (NC Hose) has been updated with the brace. After the vehicle has been checked, and corrected if necessary, obtain a label (SD 92-095) and: a) emboss your BMW dealer warranty number in the middle of the label (1); b) punch out code number 239 printed on the label and, c) affix the label to the B pillar as shown: If the vehicle already has a label from a previous Service Action/Recall Campaign, affix the new label next to the old one. Do not affix one label on top of another one because a number from an underlying label could appear in the punched-out hole of the new label. Warranty Information: Parts and Labor are reimbursable under the terms of the BMW New Car Limited Warranty. Reimbursement will be provided through campaign entry.
